Beach Clean-up

Today La Tortuga Verde hosted a beach cleanup for a lively bunch of children from Centro Escolar ‘El Esteron’ accompanied by the Militares de DM-3.

Hoards of smiling children and local military combed the beach this morning collecting trash and other debris from the beach. It was a fantastic event, organised by the ex Mayor of Intipuca, Hugo Salinas. The enthusiasm of the children and the encouragement of the adults shows you can never be too young to learn about taking responsibility for your environment. No-one likes a litterbug!

After ensuring the beach was left sparklingly clean, the kids took to the shade of La Tortuga Verde where they received a tasty lunch of watermelon and sandwiches. It didn’t take them long to introduce themselves to the Pelicans either.

The sandwiches went down well!

The event highlights the ongoing battle to educate people of the impact waste has on the environment. Huge amounts of plastic debris litter the ocean causing a concerning level of harm. This global pollution problem endangers wildlife, aquatic habitats and impacts human health. That’s not to mention the cost to local and national economies. Hopefully, todays cleanup will inspire many more events of this kind, not just from school children and the local community. La Tortuga Verde actively encourages beach cleaning and coordinates a volunteer programme to help keep the beach gleaming every day.

Well done everyone!
